Negotiation Basics for Brand Deals
August 10, 2026ยท5 min read

Negotiating a brand deal well has less to do with confidence or charm than with discipline: slowing down, understanding the full picture, and not agreeing to anything before it's actually clear what's being agreed to.

Slow Down Before You Say Yes

Never immediately accept the first offer a brand puts on the table without reviewing the terms in full. This isn't about always countering just to counter โ€” sometimes a first offer is genuinely fair. But accepting before actually reading and understanding the full scope of what's being asked is how creators end up agreeing to more than they realized.

Scope Before Price

It's tempting to jump straight to the rate, but price only means something once the scope is clear โ€” deliverables, timeline, and usage all change what a fair number actually is. Understand the full scope of what's being requested before getting into numbers, so the price being discussed is actually attached to the real deal, not a partial picture of it.

Deliverables and Usage Rights Travel Together

Deliverables and usage rights should always be considered as one package, not two separate conversations. A rate that looks fair for "one Instagram post" looks very different once paid usage or whitelisting gets added on afterward โ€” those terms change the value of the deal and should be priced accordingly from the start, not treated as an afterthought.

What You Can Decide vs What You Escalate

Ask clarifying questions before committing to anything โ€” brands generally expect this and it rarely costs a deal. Keep every exchange professional even when a negotiation gets slow or difficult. And know the boundary of your own authority: never promise something the creator hasn't actually agreed to, and know when a term, number, or condition needs to go to the agency before it's finalized rather than being decided independently.
